Still on the ‘Bush’wagon?

Obama may not fare much better than Bush on intelligence oversight

Would it be intelligent enough to keep activities of intelligence agencies under wraps? Or is it time to let accountability take priority? Obama is not finding easy answers to these questions as the debate on the Intelligence Oversight Bill gains momentum. If and when the bill is passed, top level intelligence agencies like CIA, NSA or FBI would be accountable to the people. So far, their operations have only been known to the President and his team of advisers. A similar bill was raised earlier during the regime of former President Bush and he vetoed against it; giving former Vice-President Dick Cheney full authority to run anti al-Qaeda operations secretly. And whenever there has been scope of scrutiny; for instance, on the methods of interrogation used for al Qaeda suspects or the illegal use of state surveillance, the process has been stalled on the basis of the argument that information revealed would be detrimental to security interests of the US.

The state government wants a return to the days of bounty hunting

As the Blue Bull goes on the rampage in the fields of Uttar Pradesh, the state government wants a return to the days of bounty hunting

A similar story is unfolding 13,554 kms away in the US state of Idaho. The mostly mountainous state is home to the Gray Wolf, where hunting the animal is set to begin. Hunters are bracing for a field day with loaded guns to go after the once-endangered animal and it is believed that the move could leave the state with as many as 220 wolves dead. Ironically, Idaho’s state motto is Esto Perpetua, which in Latin translates as “Let it be forever”.

Coming back to the Nilgai ‘menace’, Belinda Wright, a well known conservationist says, “Sympathy towards the farmers is understandable, for the loss of crops is a loss to their livelihood. If hunting of one species is allowed, it could open up the possibility of hunting other species in the future. It’s best not to touch hunting laws at this point. Instead, other options should be considered to address the issues of the farmers.

Perhaps it is one of those situations where it is difficult to make a choice in favour of either man or beast, but certainly there is need, now more than ever, to look for a more meaningful alternative like the one being worked out where castrating the male bull could at least curtail the problem… for in allowing hunting we are only curing the symptoms and not the disease...

Happiness is a matter of choice, and women don’t seem to be excercising it!

Psychologist, Neeta Nanda explains, “Equality of men and women has also lead to an increase in competition. Girls, during their academic period, or women, in their professional life, do not take things casually anymore. In fact, girls by nature are more sincere and tend to take tasks much more seriously than men. And this along with the zeal to excel puts women under greater mental pressure than men.”

An interesting research has been done by an American psychologist Jean Twenge, who explains that the ‘narcissism epidemic’ has been affecting women in America. More and more are experiencing frustration, stress or sudden bouts of irritation, and all this is due to factors such as having huge expectations from oneself and one’s life, pre-determining one’s academic and professional achievements, constant search of fame and status, and believing that he/she is the most important and special person. Narcissists are usually very competitive and outgoing and can seldom handle failures, which obviously everyone is bound to cross paths within life. So ladies, if you have similar thoughts running through your mind, you know where you’ll end up.

Agreed, that in this competitive world, mere survival is a struggle, but don’t forget that hardships are just stones that you step over on your journey of life. No matter how strong the storm blows on you, if you can still muster up your spirits and work and smile for the sake of your family, then you can also choose to relax, breathe and smile for yourself...

Raced barefooted!

Only running is not sufficient anymore! There’s more you have to do to make up for what you made technology do for you!

Of course, it goes without saying that all these benefits would fetch us a healthier life in the long run.For those who want to get acquainted with barefoot running, here are some tricks. (The rest just wait for a better bait in the latter half of the article!) First, to run barefoot, one must run on the forefoot without heel-striking. Secondly, let the body land first. One must land directly under it. The knees should never be straightened fully, either in front or behind the body. And lastly, go slow in your pursuit of barefoot athletics! It can be more damaging than beneficial if you aim to run like the South African athlete Zola Budd (who always trained and raced barefooted!) in just a week or a month!

Well, those who can’t imagine letting go of a surface between their foot and the ground, could try out shoes that are made using the Masai Barefoot Technology. As the name suggests, the technology used has been derived after noticing the gait, stamina and strong legs of the Masai tribals (one of the tribes that has also inspired the barefoot trend). Though many of them still walk barefoot, it is ironical that even most of the Masai have designed footwear made from tyres to provide the bare minimum comfort and yet stay almost barefoot! In fact, Nike Free technology seems to have been inspired by such minimum comfort formula…

Some ancient philosophies suggest that the life-force energy called Chi (also called Prana) is absorbed through the soles of our feet. That’s one edge that no pair of shoes can match. Well for that, if not the sole of our foot, what about energy transaction through the soul? Doesn’t that fit the bill of the uber ‘going back to the basic’ style statement even more?

How safe are you dear Mr. CEO?

It’s a business deal. They have your asset (son) and you have the consideration (Rs.60 lakh)…

His life was on a roll – both personally and professionally. A great job as the CEO of Adobe India, a loving wife Nidhi and a three year-old son on whom they lavished all their love and spare time. Life was perfectly normal for the Guptas when Naresh boarded the flight to Hong Kong in November, 2007 for a series of business meetings. In the morning of November 12, the 3 year-old Anant stepped out of his house to attend his pre-nursery classes at Lotus Valley International School in Noida. Anant never reached school that day. At about 8.45 A.M, he was kidnapped almost right in front of his house by two men on a motorcycle. All hell broke loose as the security guard of the Guptas – Kameshwar got 4 consecutive phone calls asking about the presence of cops. Of course, the media frenzy had started by then and a shattered Nidhi had to cope alone with intrusive, persistent and demanding reporters from 24-hour news channels laying siege to her house. “I had to immediately fly back from Hong Kong,” recalls Naresh even as he plays around with Anant, now a peppy and talkative 5 year-old. The ransom demand was Rs.6 million and he of course paid it to save his son (details later). Today, Naresh and Nidhi thank God and professional help for getting Anant back, safe!

But not every CEO or entrepreneur who gets a ransom demand of Rs.6 million for a kidnapped child is as lucky. Software entrepreneur, venture capitalist and MD of Golozan Technologies, Sanjay Chawla, is one such shattered man. His 17 year-old son Ribhu was on his way back home on July 28, 2009 from K.R. Mangalam School on his two-wheeler, when he was stopped and abducted by a gang of men in a WagonR. Sanjay and his family soon heard from the kidnappers who used Ribhu’s mobile phone to demand Rs.6 million as ransom. They even spoke to Ribhu who assured them that he was safe. The family paid an ‘advance ransom’ of Rs.1.5 million within the next 24 hours. The end to the tale: Ribhu’s dead body was found the next day in Vasant Kunj. A pall of gloom and despair now hangs over the Chawla residence in Delhi and there is a lot of bitterness.

Bubbling inside

More trouble lies ahead in China as scores die after clashes between ethic groups in Xinjiang

In an outburst of fury in China, Uighurs, a Muslim ethnic group with Turkic genesis, clashed with Han Chinese in Urumqi, the capital city of the western province of Xinjiang. A mass demonstration by ethnic Uighurs turned into a full-blown street clash when the police and Han Chinese watching protest were smashed by the horde. This protest was called in the wake of last month’s violence when a faction of Uighur workers in southern China was whacked to death by Han Chinese. Meanwhile, Chinese establishment have detained almost 1,500 people and locked down the capital of Xinjiang province as the toll of dead mounted to 150 people and at least 800 injured. As this report went to prints, protests spread to other cities as well. Meanwhile, the local head of the Chinese Communist Party was reportedly seen pleading weapon wielding mob on road with folded hands. The situation is so bad that President Hu Jintao abandoned the G8 summit in Italy to deal with the lethal outburst of ethnic turmoil.

Xinjiang—on record an autonomous province in China’s west—was sparingly inhabited till 90’s and boasted of huge reserves of oil, gas and minerals. Formerly a key shipment point on the old Silk Road linking China to Europe, the province was briefly independent during late 40’s when it was named East Turkestan. In the 90’s Chinese government encouraged the migration of Han Chinese, who now account for half the population of the province.

No more destiny’s child

To come to power and stay in it is what the Krichners’ and their competitors need to figure out

When Argentina goes to elections on June 28, a lot would be at stake not only for the country but also for those who have been in power. If at all economic conditions of the country have not improved, it shows that the first couple, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her predecessor and husband, Néstor Krichner are losing ground. While the mid-term elections were supposed to take place in October as per schedule, the pre-ponment of the mid-term polls in all probability would spell doom for the current government. Says Jorge Giacobe, pollster and analyst, “…this is the end of the prolific cycle of the Kirchner name.”

The era which began in 2003, when Néstor came to power and tried to and to a great extent even succeeded in, controlling the tumbling economy of c appears to be nearing its end. During his rule the economy started to recover from the recession it faced during 2001-03. Néstor reduced the debt on the country, a step which worked in the beginning but failed as time went by. Yet power did not elude him as he was succedeed by his wife.

But now, things could be changing. This is more than evident since the country election has seen a heavy flow of funds. The drums are beating loud and many new presidential candidates have come to join the race.

Francisco de Narvaez, who is the closest competitor to Krichner and heads the deputies lists in Buenos Aires, is spending millions to fortify his position. Public opinion polls show that the two are close to each other as far as results go.

Crime on their minds!

Care to learn and discuss crime fiction writing? Then Crimefest is where you should head to!

It was a dark, stormy night. As I drove down a narrow winding road, my car broke down. There wasn’t a single soul around… Far away a light glowed from a tiny cottage, and I began to make my way to it to ask for help. The door creaked as I pushed it open and stepped straight into a pool of blood! And there right before me lay a dead man on the floor, with a knife still lodged in his chest… and then suddenly the door slapped shut behind me! If such stories thrill and intrigue you then ‘Crimefest’ – an annual convention of crime authors, editors, publishers, reviewers etc – definitely calls for a visit. Being organised for the second time in UK, Crimefest is a forum to interact with numerous crime authors, to learn the art of crime writing and also celebrate this genre in an informal atmosphere. Although fiction writing has existed since centuries, crime fiction became a serious genre as late as the 1900s, and owes its popularity to the evolution of print media in UK. While many writers have pitched in their contributions, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes has mesmerised readers through generations.

And now when there are numerous crime writers and takers, Crimefest serves as a medium of understanding the genre, the writers and the thoughts that cultivate such stories. And talking about the kind of thought process that one needs to develop for crime writing, Peter Guttridge, an author and crime fiction critic, expounds, “Well, to be a successful crime writer one must be capable of deceit, one has to be cunning and willing to lie to people! After all, most crime writing aims to fool or trick the reader until the denouements at the end of the novel.” So, does one construe that crime writing instils one with negative thoughts? Peter clarifies, “I think that rather than encouraging negative thoughts, it provides a catharsis for both, the reader and the writer, for those negative thoughts that already exist. Most crime fiction is essentially moral – evil does not triumph, good people do win. Wish that was true in the real world too!”

General Dyer’s legacy

This massacre destroyed the image of Britain forever

It was on the sacred day of the Baisakhi festival, April 13, 1919, that some 25,000 men, women and children gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh, then a debris-littered compound. The occasion was a peaceful public meeting held to assert the right of the people to assemble and protest which was curbed by the martial law imposed by then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’ Dyer. Many just came in after offering their prayers at the Golden Temple. Soon after the meeting started, General Dyer and his troops arrived with the guns. As the machine guns started raining bullets, the dead piled upon the dead. There were tall buildings on four sides of the enclosure and the only exit was blocked by guns. The result was a stampede. Women and children were crushed under the feet of those trying to escape the firing.

Many jumped into the well and a few sought shelter behind the small temple in the enclosure. As many as 379 people were killed on the spot and three times more wounded to die later. As many as 120 bodies were recovered from the well into which people jumped to escape the bullets. Horrified by the presentation of a siropa (robe of honour) to General Dyer by the priest of the Golden Temple, the Akalis launched the Gurdwara Reform Movement to guard the sanctity of the religious places. The Bharat Naujawan Sabha which was to produce revolutionary patriots like Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh was also launched then.

Blood flowed thinner...

An empire torn apart by acrimony and distrust

They have been successful through thick and thin, but the break ups and controversies in their family has been quite embarassing for the Birlas. The fateful year was 1986 when they finally decided to split the Rs.25 billion worth Birla group (in 1983) into six groups. Then trouble knocked hard at their door in 2004 in the form of the disconcerting billion-dollar hullabaloo surrounding Priyamvada Birla’s (widow of M.P. Birla) will. The will gave an outsider – Rajendra S. Lodha the control over the stakes in several M. P. Birla-owned companies. The Birla clan led by B. K. Birla decided to fight together as ‘one’ against their common enemy. R. S. Lodha’s sudden demise in London last year, but Lodha’s sons are now in the fray. It was highly unfortunate that G. D. Birla’s iconic legacy had to move in this direction.

Many feast to manifesto!!!

The disconnect between reality and manifestos continues...

April 11, 2009: Samajwadi Party (SP) released its ‘concave’ election manifesto. The party promises to remove computers, ban English education, ban machineries in agriculture and also put a ban on share trading. What the party forgot is that it is the service sector that is the largest contributor to GDP and the largest employer as well. And the most noteworthy point is that the service sector is only able to churn out such huge revenues because of English and IT services. If by any chance this dream of SP is realised, then India may not only see drop in foreign revenues but a huge increase in unemployment rate as well. Ironically for these anti-English campaigners, let us remind them that even their website that caters to huge vote bank is written in English itself!

Congress also stressed on economic policies that will aim to achieve inclusive growth and low inflation if voted back to power. Ironically Congress is promising to do something they could have done in last five years. Given the current fiscal and economic condition, the whole manifesto seems more like a fairy tale. The BJP is also not far behind in this vote-luring exercise, and it seems that they are determined about not learning from past mistakes. Or else why on the earth would they promise to rebuild Ram temple and promote hinduvta even when this theme has been counter productive in fetching votes for them? Surprisingly, not even a single party’s manifesto talked about the current economic condition and how would they tackle the same. It seems that amidst their political fights they have found economic matter to be too light to find space in their manifesto.

Yo! Barack can’t get it up!

History shows Dutch have been more successful than Americans

The Brits couldn’t do it, Soviets got it premature, the US couldn’t even get it up, while the Dutch seem to be having a field run. We mean the Afghan strategy! Our suggestive innuendos aside, US led allied forces in the inhospitable terrain of Afghanistan can’t seem to get their counter terrorism strategy up and running.

Being the hub of Osama Bin Laden and epicenter of world terror, the sheer unfamiliarity of the land despite years of yankee presence in Afghan is hitting the Obama administration too hard. While Hameed Karzai wants Obama out of Afghanistan, now Obama is returning the sentiment, giving hints for him to be nudged out. But wait, all is not lost. There is a ray of hope, specifically in the central province of Uruzgan, vindicated by the Dutch Army controlling the region.

Why Indians Will Hate Obama

Very soon, you might have Prakash Karat and fellow comrades crooning, ‘I told you so’, as the Indian media slams Barack Obama and Uncle Sam for once again ‘tilting against’ India. You can already hear murmurs of protest as protectionism gathers momentum in America and young Indians find their dream jobs disappearing in the United States. You must have read some pundits suggest how India must adopt tit for tat measures by denying contracts to companies like Boeing. By now, many defense pundits, too, have expressed shock at Uncle Sam denying some key technologies to the Indian armed forces. Then there are those hawks who are now convinced that America is absolutely not interested in genuinely helping India

when it comes to battling cross border terrorism. And rest assured, the Obama administration will take many decisions and make many choices that will anger, dismay and even outrage urban Indians who haven’t stopped fantasizing about the emerging strategic partnership between India and America. For this breed of Indians, Uncle Sam would follow up the nuclear deal by doing everything that is anti-Pakistan and anti-China if they have a conflict of interest with India. Sadly such delusions always get shattered. They will inevitably get shattered by end of this year. So after the Indo-US euphoria of the last few years, get prepared for a phase of disappointment and rage at the perfidy of Uncle Sam. And don’t be surprised if Obama becomes one of the most criticized personalities in Indian media (in any case, even his honeymoon with the American media is on the verge of collapsing).

The brutal fact is: both the media and the middle class Indians will be wrong when they rail at Obama and his policies. The reason behind that is another brutal fact: India stills behaves childishly and naively when it comes to the pursuit of national interests, foreign policy and geo-poltics. No wonder, the discourse on foreign policy in India oscillates between triumphant and childish optimism and naïve pessimism. When India signed the nuclear deal, optimism reached a feverish pitch; when a few Indians don’t get American jobs, the pessimism plunges into depths of despair. That is because most Indians confuse between cold blooded pursuit of national interests and the feel good buzz around emotional bonding. There will always be some occasions when America and India’s national interests do not converge when it comes to dealing with Pakistan. That does not make America anti-Indian. There will always be some occasions when the head will rule over the heart and Uncle Sam will choose China over India (China happens to literally propping up the US economy at the moment by sending surplus dollars to America). That doesn’t make America anti-Indian. There will always be some occasions when political compulsions in America will hurt India Inc. Again, that doesn’t make America anti-Indian. But beyond these simple facts, there is another brutal fact that would hurt many Indians. We tend to think that India is more important than it actually is. Sample this fact: Obama''s Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has visited Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing soon after taking over. New Delhi was never on the agenda. And who visited India?

Fed-up with Satyam? Be ready for more!

Radical restructuring of SEBI is extremely imperative, say Pathikrit Payne & Sray Agarwal of B&E

Is it becoming a unique Indian trend to first shower companies with all kinds of fancy awards only to be egged in the face in a few years’ time after all the wrong doings, malpractices and manipulation that went unheard and unseen in those companies? While the Satyam fiasco suddenly awakened the investors’ community about the intriguing aspect of how lectures on corporate governance & best practices and fudging of accounts can go hand in hand, the matter of the fact is that Satyam is not a one-time case. In1999, two sister software companies namely, Pentasoft Technologies Ltd and Pentamedia Graphics Ltd. had a phoenix like rise and a subsequent fall faster than nine-pins thanks to a mindless expansion spree and attempts of diversifying into real-estates and multiplexes while the core business of software development got compromised. Their promoter V. Chandrasekaran was reported to be associated with broker Ketan Parekh in artificially raising the share prices.

So, does the model sound familiar? If not, then next in the line is the Dinesh Dalmia who promoted DSQ Software Limited. In the year 2000, CBI arrested him for his involvement in a stocks scam of Rs. 5.95 billion and for his attempts to make quick money through unallotted shares worth Rs. 13 million (which were not listed on any stock exchange). He also cooked his books in the typical Ramlinga Raju style. Sadly, corporate India is littered with cases of similar frauds. Just like Satyam, the South India-based IT Company Silverline Technologies was also vested upon with lots of awards and Ravi Subramanian, Chairman of Silverline Technologies was even tagged as the next Narayana Murthy in the making. It was ranked among the top five IT companies in India. Akin to Satyam, Silverline took-over Seranova, but didn’t have money to pay up for the deal. And remember all these were happening just under the nose of SEBI. While Dalmia is still fighting it out to get his bail approved, Silverline is back in business and has been re-listed on BSE.

Global best practices

Safexpress will need to proactively align with global best practices, says Pawan Chabra of B&E

If one goes by the numbers, the future of logistics in India certainly looks dazzling. In fact, according to a study done by Cushman & Wakefield, the Indian logistics industry is anticipated to grow at a healthy rate of 15-20% per annum (way above the average growth rate of 7-10% that the sector have had between 2002 and 2007) to reach a whopping $385 billion by 2015. According to a KPMG report, India’s spend on logistics activities is equivalent to 13% of its GDP, compared to less than 10% in almost all the developed nations. But then this necessarily doesn’t mean big business! The key reason for this astonishing big size is relatively higher level of inefficiencies in the system, with lower average transportaion speeds, higher turnaround times at ports and high costs of administrative delays. Players like Safexpress will need to take the lead in correcting this anomaly.

Moreover, the Indian logistics industry is dominated by unorganised players. Transporters with fleets smaller than five trucks account for over 75% of the total trucks owned and operated in India and make up 80% of revenues. Even the freight forwarding segment comprises thousands of small customs brokers and clearing & forwarding agents, who just cater to local cargo requirements. So, considering this, the biggest challenge for organised players like Safexpress will be to take the growth forward. In fact, “one can even see a major phase of consolidation in the sector in the coming times,” avers Pradhan.

No doubt Safexpress has generated a decent level of loyalty and trust towards the brand in the past few years, but with the sudden flurry of international behemoths like FedEx, DHL, TNT, et al, and considering their edge over domestic players, particularly because of their big pockets, players like Safexpress will definitely find it hard to retain clients.

BARACK OBAMA: PRESENTS THE NEW BUDGET

So says Obama, who spares nobody in his attempt to save the world
In 2009, the same is estimated by IMF to reach a lower 12.20%! Compare this to say a country like India. In 1990, India’s savings rate was 23%, in 2004 it reached 27.6%, and in 2008, the same touched a mind numbing 40%. China has already touched 50% in this decade!!!

Is there a learning out here? “For too long, our budget has not told the whole truth about how precious tax dollars are spent,” Obama quoted while presenting the budget, “Large sums have been left off the books, including the true cost of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that kind of dishonest accounting is not how you run your family budgets at home. It’s not how your government should run its budgets either.” Obama, we hope your citizens got your irritation with them quite clearly...
