Wrong medicine

Sending more troops not enough

Obama has recently announced that he will send additional NATO troops to Afghanistan to stabilize the situation. However, troops cannot solve the larger issues faced by Afghanistan.

The major stumbling block is corruption, where the enemy is ironically far better placed. To fight corruption in its ranks, the Taliban has set up its own anti-corruption committees in 33 provinces. It also runs its own courts, which are known for quick justice without the need to pay bribes. The US is trying to win over mid-level Taliban commanders with lucrative job offers and offering them good money, which is, to a large extent, not working! In comparison, the Afghan military is hopelessly incompetent, ill-equipped and highly corrupt. Afghanistan supplies over 90% of the world’s opium and heroin, which brings in billions in revenue each year.

Dr. Hari Shankar Gupta, Director, IARI talks about agriculture and what changes need to be brought in

B&E: Private sector seed products are more popular than public sector seeds despite later are much cheaper?

BSN: The difference in quality of public sector and private sector seed brands is minimal. But, public sector seed companies lack aggressive branding and marketing strategies than their private counterparts. Public sector has mostly focused on research and they are really not good at marketing. Now, we have given license to 19 private sector companies of the variety Pusa Rice Hybrid-10.

B&E: There are certain agriculture products which are perishable in nature. We have not developed storage capacity for them. This has seriously affected economic health of farmers What is your view point?

HSG: This reference is about fruits and vegetable products. It is a shocking truth that 30% of these products are wasted due to lack of proper storage capacity. To solve this problem government is giving thrust to the food processing sector. Now, coming to field crops our storage capacity is much less than what we need.

B&E: One of the major problems of the farmers is the lack of proper advice at right time. Why IARI has not been able to move in this direction?

HSG: You are right. Agriculture is a state subject. While central government can only act as facilitator, the onus lies on respective state governments. Wherever, agriculture extension machinery has been good, there is good progress but wherever, state government has been inept, agriculture has suffered.

Still on the ‘Bush’wagon?

Obama may not fare much better than Bush on intelligence oversight

Would it be intelligent enough to keep activities of intelligence agencies under wraps? Or is it time to let accountability take priority? Obama is not finding easy answers to these questions as the debate on the Intelligence Oversight Bill gains momentum. If and when the bill is passed, top level intelligence agencies like CIA, NSA or FBI would be accountable to the people. So far, their operations have only been known to the President and his team of advisers. A similar bill was raised earlier during the regime of former President Bush and he vetoed against it; giving former Vice-President Dick Cheney full authority to run anti al-Qaeda operations secretly. And whenever there has been scope of scrutiny; for instance, on the methods of interrogation used for al Qaeda suspects or the illegal use of state surveillance, the process has been stalled on the basis of the argument that information revealed would be detrimental to security interests of the US.

The state government wants a return to the days of bounty hunting

As the Blue Bull goes on the rampage in the fields of Uttar Pradesh, the state government wants a return to the days of bounty hunting

A similar story is unfolding 13,554 kms away in the US state of Idaho. The mostly mountainous state is home to the Gray Wolf, where hunting the animal is set to begin. Hunters are bracing for a field day with loaded guns to go after the once-endangered animal and it is believed that the move could leave the state with as many as 220 wolves dead. Ironically, Idaho’s state motto is Esto Perpetua, which in Latin translates as “Let it be forever”.

Coming back to the Nilgai ‘menace’, Belinda Wright, a well known conservationist says, “Sympathy towards the farmers is understandable, for the loss of crops is a loss to their livelihood. If hunting of one species is allowed, it could open up the possibility of hunting other species in the future. It’s best not to touch hunting laws at this point. Instead, other options should be considered to address the issues of the farmers.

Perhaps it is one of those situations where it is difficult to make a choice in favour of either man or beast, but certainly there is need, now more than ever, to look for a more meaningful alternative like the one being worked out where castrating the male bull could at least curtail the problem… for in allowing hunting we are only curing the symptoms and not the disease...

Happiness is a matter of choice, and women don’t seem to be excercising it!

Psychologist, Neeta Nanda explains, “Equality of men and women has also lead to an increase in competition. Girls, during their academic period, or women, in their professional life, do not take things casually anymore. In fact, girls by nature are more sincere and tend to take tasks much more seriously than men. And this along with the zeal to excel puts women under greater mental pressure than men.”

An interesting research has been done by an American psychologist Jean Twenge, who explains that the ‘narcissism epidemic’ has been affecting women in America. More and more are experiencing frustration, stress or sudden bouts of irritation, and all this is due to factors such as having huge expectations from oneself and one’s life, pre-determining one’s academic and professional achievements, constant search of fame and status, and believing that he/she is the most important and special person. Narcissists are usually very competitive and outgoing and can seldom handle failures, which obviously everyone is bound to cross paths within life. So ladies, if you have similar thoughts running through your mind, you know where you’ll end up.

Agreed, that in this competitive world, mere survival is a struggle, but don’t forget that hardships are just stones that you step over on your journey of life. No matter how strong the storm blows on you, if you can still muster up your spirits and work and smile for the sake of your family, then you can also choose to relax, breathe and smile for yourself...

Raced barefooted!

Only running is not sufficient anymore! There’s more you have to do to make up for what you made technology do for you!

Of course, it goes without saying that all these benefits would fetch us a healthier life in the long run.For those who want to get acquainted with barefoot running, here are some tricks. (The rest just wait for a better bait in the latter half of the article!) First, to run barefoot, one must run on the forefoot without heel-striking. Secondly, let the body land first. One must land directly under it. The knees should never be straightened fully, either in front or behind the body. And lastly, go slow in your pursuit of barefoot athletics! It can be more damaging than beneficial if you aim to run like the South African athlete Zola Budd (who always trained and raced barefooted!) in just a week or a month!

Well, those who can’t imagine letting go of a surface between their foot and the ground, could try out shoes that are made using the Masai Barefoot Technology. As the name suggests, the technology used has been derived after noticing the gait, stamina and strong legs of the Masai tribals (one of the tribes that has also inspired the barefoot trend). Though many of them still walk barefoot, it is ironical that even most of the Masai have designed footwear made from tyres to provide the bare minimum comfort and yet stay almost barefoot! In fact, Nike Free technology seems to have been inspired by such minimum comfort formula…

Some ancient philosophies suggest that the life-force energy called Chi (also called Prana) is absorbed through the soles of our feet. That’s one edge that no pair of shoes can match. Well for that, if not the sole of our foot, what about energy transaction through the soul? Doesn’t that fit the bill of the uber ‘going back to the basic’ style statement even more?

How safe are you dear Mr. CEO?

It’s a business deal. They have your asset (son) and you have the consideration (Rs.60 lakh)…

His life was on a roll – both personally and professionally. A great job as the CEO of Adobe India, a loving wife Nidhi and a three year-old son on whom they lavished all their love and spare time. Life was perfectly normal for the Guptas when Naresh boarded the flight to Hong Kong in November, 2007 for a series of business meetings. In the morning of November 12, the 3 year-old Anant stepped out of his house to attend his pre-nursery classes at Lotus Valley International School in Noida. Anant never reached school that day. At about 8.45 A.M, he was kidnapped almost right in front of his house by two men on a motorcycle. All hell broke loose as the security guard of the Guptas – Kameshwar got 4 consecutive phone calls asking about the presence of cops. Of course, the media frenzy had started by then and a shattered Nidhi had to cope alone with intrusive, persistent and demanding reporters from 24-hour news channels laying siege to her house. “I had to immediately fly back from Hong Kong,” recalls Naresh even as he plays around with Anant, now a peppy and talkative 5 year-old. The ransom demand was Rs.6 million and he of course paid it to save his son (details later). Today, Naresh and Nidhi thank God and professional help for getting Anant back, safe!

But not every CEO or entrepreneur who gets a ransom demand of Rs.6 million for a kidnapped child is as lucky. Software entrepreneur, venture capitalist and MD of Golozan Technologies, Sanjay Chawla, is one such shattered man. His 17 year-old son Ribhu was on his way back home on July 28, 2009 from K.R. Mangalam School on his two-wheeler, when he was stopped and abducted by a gang of men in a WagonR. Sanjay and his family soon heard from the kidnappers who used Ribhu’s mobile phone to demand Rs.6 million as ransom. They even spoke to Ribhu who assured them that he was safe. The family paid an ‘advance ransom’ of Rs.1.5 million within the next 24 hours. The end to the tale: Ribhu’s dead body was found the next day in Vasant Kunj. A pall of gloom and despair now hangs over the Chawla residence in Delhi and there is a lot of bitterness.
