Reverse innovation/exnovation

All that you wanted to know about the leading principles that drive innovation excellence, from those who created them

While innovation isn’t exactly suited to the short term mentality that affl icts most Indian companies, the impact of innovation on corporate sustainability can hardly be overestimated, as is indicated by numerous studies. Dr.Nam D. Pham, Managing Partner, NDP Consulting, attempted to assess the impact of innovation and IP protection on the US economy and concluded that IP intensive industries “create jobs and spur economic growth as results from high investments in research and development”. They were found to have output and sales that were over twice those of non-IP intensive industries, paid their employees around 60% more; and their R&D spends were around 13 times more than the latter.

Clearly, companies today need to take the innovation challenge head on and meet a variety of challenges right from the product idea to commercialisation to protecting its IP. This cover feature, which is a joint study between the Tuck School of Business (ranked number 1 in the Economist’s ranking of full time MBA programs globally last year), B&E and IIPM Think Tank along with primary research insights from the Indian Council for Market Research (ICMR), presents remarkable insights from global thought leaders on how companies can make innovation a success. Prof. Vijay Govindarajan, Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business and Founding Director, Tuck’s Center for Global Leadership (who has been ranked 3rd on the Forbes list of “World’s Most Infl uential Business Thinkers, 2011), presents a snapshot of his benchmark research on the phenomenon of Reverse Innovation (a term coined and popularised by him along with his colleague Prof. Chris Trimble, Faculty, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth). He elaborates on the need for MNCs to start innovating from scratch for emerging markets (which are the new hubs of potential), and then bring these products back to developing and even developed markets; rather than relying too heavily on glocalisation. Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri, Hony. Director, IIPM Think Tank and Editor-in-Chief, Business & Economy, and Prof. A, Sandeep, Group Editorial Director, Planman Media, provide us a glimpse of their rather counter-intuitive, yet immensely relevant philosophy on ‘Exnovation’. They assert that companies, rather than consistently innovating, should instil strong process orientation to ensure maximum impact within the organisation and in the market place beyond for every innovation they do. Looking at the manner in which MNCs are latching on to the Reverse Innovation wave, B&E delves into the various need gaps that these companies are targeting, how they are attempting to commercialise the innovations in new markets and the learnings in that regard for Indian firms.

Now, The best Adsin other Categories!

The criteria for shortlisting ads that have an edge over others are as follows: product positioning clarity; clinching benefit to the brand; presence of a power idea; visibility of brand personality; expectancy of communication; single-minded focus of message; reward to the prospect; visually arresting and painstaking craftsmanship. Here’s a peek into our Print, Outdoor, Viral and BTL verdict for the fortnight ending March 10, 2011

Cocoberry

Baseline: Show your love
Category: Print

4Ps B&M TAKE: The third installment of a series of print ads from the stable of Cocoberry, this one is a clear winner as far as creativity is concerned. A seductive lady draped in chocolate and cream set against a black backdrop are perfect ingredients for seeking attention of prospective customers. The ad campaign is working wonders as there has been a substantial increase in the sales of the company as well as the number of fans on its Facebook page (the fan base has already crossed 100,000). Cocoon India has taken over the creative duties and will be following up with a 360o campaigns. With no competition in sight, the innovative concept of selling frozen yoghurt coupled with tempting advertising is a sure shot winner strategy.

Emirates

Baseline: Fly Emirates, Keep Discovering
Category: Print

4Ps B&M TAKE: ”Guess where, and we’ll fly you there” – that’s what Emirates promises in its recently launched print creative (which is part of a 360o campaign conceptualised by Mudra Communications). The airline is aggressively advertising in order to highlight a slew of promotional campaigns. The latest one gives customer a chance to fly for free by guessing the most popular destinations in the world. The creative has been artistically crafted using a snapshot of the US. In case you are reading this, do SMS or log on to the Emirates website. Who knows you could be on a flight off to an exotic location!

‘The Big Green help for Kids’... Come Again?!

She came, we saw and Nick conquered. If you thought all your life that ‘Nick’ was an alias used for names, don’t fret – you’re not the target market for Nina Elavia Jaipuria anyway. The Sr VP of Nick India – who has spent her last five years with Nickelodeon – chats up with 4Ps B&M on how she finally managed to make Nick the #1 choice in the children’s entertainment category

We heard Little Krishna garnered the highest viewership ratings amongst kid’s programmes in the country. Recently, Big Animation tied up with you for the licensing and merchandising rights of Little Krishna. How has this deal helped Nick?
These kind of deals work both ways. What should be kept in mind is that both the parties involved can leverage such deals to the best. If there is no synergy, then such deals don’t work. There was one more partnership that we had with Baskin Robbins wherein their orange flavour ice cream was named Nick. In that case, both of us benefited because Baskin Robbins got a lot of customers who wanted to have that ice cream and on the other hand we got presence in a totally different segment.

What is the biggest challenge you face in catering to kids?
One of the challenges we face is that there is only one TV in the house, so everybody wants a share of the television and in the process our target audience, which is kids, become active viewers of whatever is being watched in the family, be it news or soaps. The next challenge is the lifestyle of the kids. They have to go to schools, take care of their studies, and then they have tuitions and exams. Apart from this, the major challenge for any channel is the distribution and we are no exception.

What is the way forward with programming for kids’ channels – live action or animation?
To my mind, kids do not differentiate like that at all. They don’t say that I’m going to watch a live action show or I’m going to watch an animation show. They just come to the channel and say that I’m going to watch my favourite show Ninja Hatori or Spongebob, so on and so forth. Basically they don’t come to see a show on the basis of differentiation but on the basis of the characters that they love. I personally feel that animation is here to stay because it has more ability to capture the imagination of the children. They want to get away from boredom.

They want to get away from stress. They want to get away from Mom’s nagging. And this is all possible through animation. I think animation can deliver emotions and entertainment better than any live action based programming. So, animation is here to stay for sure, but you could always use some amount of live action as well.
